Professor Hilary Charlesworth – Chief Investigator

Hilary Charlesworth is a Professor in the Regulatory Institutions Network of the Research School of Social Sciences and Director of the newly established Centre for International Governance and Justice (CIGJ), ANU. She also holds an appointment as Professor of International Law and Human Rights in the Faculty of Law, ANU, and is an ARC Federation Fellow. Her major research area is international law, particularly human rights law. She has written on many aspects of international human rights law, from its theoretical underpinnings to practical issues of implementation. From 2002-3, she was Chair of the ACT Bill of Rights Consultative Committee.

Professor Andrew Byrnes – Chief Investigator

Professor Andrew Byrnes joined the UNSW Law Faculty as Professor of International Law in May 2005. He remains an associate of the Centre for International Governance and Justice within RegNet at the ANU. Previously, he was Professor of Law at the ANU (2001-2005) and prior to that was Associate Professor of Law at the Faculty of Law, University of Hong Kong, where he was Director of the Centre for Comparative and Public Law and Director of the Master of Laws in Human Rights until his departure in 2001. Professor Byrnes has written extensively on human rights issues, in particular on the incorporation of international human rights at the national level.

Renuka
Thilagaratnam - Director

Renuka has a LL.B. (Hons) and an LLM in International Human Rights Law from the University of Essex, UK. In 2004-2008, Renuka was part of a small team in the ACT Department of Justice and Community Safety responsible for the implementation of the Human Rights Act 2004 (ACT). Previously she worked as a legal researcher with the South African Human Rights Commission and as a research assistant for the Commonwealth Human Rights Initiative in London.

Tiffany Henderson – Research Assistant

Tiffany has been working on the Human Rights Act Research Project since March 2009. Tiffany is in the final year of an Arts/Law degree at the ANU, which included six months studying at the University of Oslo, where she concurrently worked as a research assistant for the Norwegian Centre for Human Rights. She is also a research assistant at the ANU College of Law. She has interned for a human rights focused non-government organization in Geneva, and for a trial chamber at the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia. Tiffany has previously worked as a paralegal for Goldrick Farrel Mullan.

Gabrielle McKinnon – Former Director

Gabrielle graduated from the ANU with first class honours in law. She has most recently practiced as a children’s solicitor at Marrickville Legal Centre in NSW, and was accredited as a specialist practitioner in the field of children’s law. Gabrielle has been a member of the Juvenile Justice Advisory Council of NSW and the steering committee for the Non Government report to the UN on the Convention on the Rights of the Child. She has convened the National Youth Advocates Network and the Youth Justice Coalition of NSW. Gabrielle has also practiced in intellectual property law at Freehills solicitors in Sydney.
